| What
is Storytelling/Story Acting?
Storytelling/Story
Acting or Doing Stories is a technique
developed by
Vivian Gussin Paley, MacArthur Genius Award winning
author. Through the storytelling/story acting
process, the classroom teacher, in either a child
care center, family child care home or in an elementary
school, listens to, then records childrens
original stories. Later, the teacher gathers the
classroom of children into a circle to act out
and act in each others stories. The teacher
acts as narrator. This process becomes a part
of the daily life of the classroom, center or
home. Stories reflect childrens experiences
and understandings as they build on each others
stories. Teachers see each childs style
and language skills develop as they become more
comfortable and familiar with creating and acting
out stories.
The
Benefits of Storytelling/Story Acting
- Storytelling/Story
Acting benefits children, teachers and parents
in a multitude of ways.
- Children
share their thoughts and feelings, form a community
of oral tradition makers, see their
ideas revealed through the acting out process,
and gain a strong sense of the way language
works.
- Teachers
learn about the inner life of children and gain
an appreciation for the childrens abilities
and imagination.
- Parents
learn more about their childrens inventiveness
and continue the process at home, thereby, creating
an intimate family ritual upon which they build
a family tradition. The link between home and
school/center fosters a bond between families
and teachers.
