How
to become a Family Child Care Provider
Family
Child Care is defined as care provided to a small
group of children in an individuals own
home. The quality of family child care depends
on the person providing it. It is important for
the sake of the children that the person giving
the care really likes being in child care field
and has chosen it as a profession. Becoming a
family child care provider involves more than
just being paid for caring for children. It means
making a commitment to a career, a career that
is not for everyone. A family child care provider
has tremendous human and legal responsibilities
to the children in care, to their parents and
to her own family.
A family child care provider needs to have
these qualities:

sincere liking for children and for being
with them |

Respect
for each child as a unique individual and
acceptance and respect for his family |
| 3. |
Sensitivity
to childrens feelings and ideas |
| 4. |
An
ability to listen to children, observe and
guide their behavior and communicate with
them at their level |
| 5. |
Patience
and consistency with children throughout the
day |
| 6. |
An
ability to provide well-planned and varied
daily activities that encourage each child
to grow and learn |
| 7. |
A
safe and healthy environment for the children |
| 8. |
A
plan for providing nutritious, well-balanced
meals and snacks for children |
| 9. |
Sufficient
energy to manage a child care business |
| 10. |
Stability,
maturity and a sense of humor |
In
New Jersey, Family Child Care Providers are not
required to be licensed but may voluntarily apply
to become a state-registered provider. The regulations
governing Family Child Care Registration are outlined
in the Manual of Requirements for Family Child
Care Registration (N.J.A.C.10: 126). In order
to be eligible for a Certificate of Registration
a provider must:

Be
18 years of age |
| |
Be
of good character and reputation, with sufficient
knowledge, intelligence and maturity to maintain
a family child care home |

Submit
a health form completed by a doctor indicating
they are in sufficient physical, mental and
emotional health to properly care for children

| |
Reside
in the home where the care is provided |
| |
Provide
a safe, healthy environment for children |
| |
Receive
clearance on a Child Abuse Record Information
background check |
| |
Attend
an 8-hour pre-service training session |
| |
Attend
an additional 12 hours of training during
the three-year registration period |
| |
Have
current CPR and First Aid certification |
| |
Provide
age appropriate activities for the children |
