How to become a Family Child Care Provider

Family Child Care is defined as care provided to a small group of children in an individual’s own home. The quality of family child care depends on the person providing it. It is important for the sake of the children that the person giving the care really likes being in child care field and has chosen it as a profession. Becoming a family child care provider involves more than just being paid for caring for children. It means making a commitment to a career, a career that is not for everyone. A family child care provider has tremendous human and legal responsibilities to the children in care, to their parents and to her own family.

A family child care provider needs to have these qualities:

1. A sincere liking for children and for being with them
2. Respect for each child as a unique individual and acceptance and respect for his family
3. Sensitivity to children’s feelings and ideas
4. An ability to listen to children, observe and guide their behavior and communicate with them at their level
5. Patience and consistency with children throughout the day
6. An ability to provide well-planned and varied daily activities that encourage each child to grow and learn
7. A safe and healthy environment for the children
8. A plan for providing nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks for children
9. Sufficient energy to manage a child care business
10. Stability, maturity and a sense of humor
